In order to get a skin care certificate and NJ esthetician license to start practicing a skin care services in the state of New Jersey, you should meet the minimum requirements, fill couple of applications and take the skin care exam.
Minimum requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Be at least 17 years old
- 600 hours of training at an esthetician school approved by NJ Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling
NJ Skin Care Permit
After finishing the 600 hours of training, you should apply for a word permit, that allows to start practicing you skills, once you get the permit, an aditional 300 hours of work should be done before taking the state Exam
NJ Skin Care License
To get the Skin Care license from the State of New Jersey, you must take the state’s written and practical exam, note that the pass score is 75 for both exams
Transfer your ou-of-state skincare license
If you have already got your skin care/esthetician license from another state than New Jersey, you can transfer your license and get licensed in NJ by:
- Providing a transcript proves that you finished the 600 hours training at another school
- Or work certificate of 3 years of the professional experience in the field
- Taking the State exam

First time Application Checklist
- Be sure that you meet all reqirements
- Finish all 600 hours of training in an approved school
- Get your work permit
- Finish the 300 hours of work
- Take the state Exam
- Fill out the required forms carefully, and read the entire application before you submit it
- Notarize your signature on the application at any Notary Public.
- Include the correct application filing fee with your application
- Submit an official transcripts or examination results If you need it
- Proof that you are licensed in a state other than New Jersey, in case you need to transfer you license
- If you are required to undergo a Criminal History Background Check, schedule an appointment to have your fingerprints digitally recorded as soon as you receive the fingerprinting instructions
- If you have been arrested or convicted of a crime, you must submit a detailed letter of explanation
- Submit a passport-style photograph
- Include a copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order if you have changed your name.
- Notify the Board promptly of any new address or change of address after you have submited your license application
