As all states in the US, the state of New York requires persons who want to practice skin care services or starting it as a professional career to get licensed first, which means you need to meet the minimum requirements, filling couple of applications and submitting different documents
Requirements:
- You should be al least 17 years old
- You must complete a 600 hour of training and courses from a NY State Licensing Services approved esthetician school, or any equivalent (5 years experience, endorsement or education from another state)
- Pass both the NY state written and practical exam
New York state skin care license exam
In order to take the Skin Care License and certificate written and practical examination in NY state you should complete the 600 hour course of study, which you can prove it by filling the Affirmation of New York State Approved Schooling section of the esthetics application, this section must be completed by your school director.
Also you can apply to take the NY skin care license exam if you are attending another school from another state, in this case you must submit:
- A school certificate
- A school transcript listing subjects and hours completed
- A current, original Certification of Licensure from your state board or, if not licensed, a current Certification from your state’s board verifying the hours claimed.
If the application was accepted, you would receive notice that explains every detail of the exam process.
Getting NY skin care license without going to school
Yes, as we discussed in the beginning of this article, going to school is not the only way to take the New York state esthetics license, if you can provide any equivalents of the 600 hours of training, you would be able to take the exam, or even to get your license without any type of examinations in some cases:
1- Experience
Professional experience in the skin care fields means a lot for New York state Division of Licensing and Services, if you have 5 years experience or more you would be able to avoid the school training, all you need to do is providing a couple of documents based on your experince
Experience within the US:
If you have been working in skin care industry inside the United States, all you need is:
- An original certification from the licensing agency you were previously licensed with.
- Two experience statements or recommendations filled out by employers, co-workers, clients, that can claim your experience in the state for at least five years. These experience statements must include dates (month and year of start of service and month and year of end of service), location (Full address including: City, State, shop name), and specific services that you performed.
- Copy of tax returns which indicate Esthetics as a job
Experience outside of the US:
Documents may include but are not limited to:
- Official certification from the licensing authority in your country or verification from the Consulate that a license is not required to practice this occupation in your country.
- Detailed letters from employer(s) in your country specifying EXACT dates of employment, location and specific services that you performed.
- Detailed letters from your client(s), or coworker(s), in your country specifying EXACT dates of service, location and specific services you performed.
- Copy of passport which indicates Esthetics as job/occupation, drivers license, workbook with Esthetics experience, or any photo identification.
- Copies of course curricula and diplomas/certificates for education completed in your country.
- Copy of tax returns which indicate Esthetics as occupation if available.
If your application was accepted after being reviewed, you may obtain your Esthetics license in New York State without any kind of examination or further education.
2 – Endorsement
If you hold an Esthetics license in another state/jurisdiction and would like to practice skin care services, you must get licensed in the state of New York first, which you can obtain through endorsement without examination or further education if your license was from one of flowing states:
- Alaska
- Arizona
- Colorado
- District of Columbia (Washington, DC)
- Maine
- Massachusetts
- New Mexico
- New Hampshire
- North Carolina
- Oregon
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Tennessee
- Utah
- West Virginia
- Wyoming
Unfortunately there is no New Jersey state on the list.
3 – Previous New York State Licensure
In case you have a previous expired NY Esthetics license, you should renew it within the next 5 years from the expiration date cited on the license, if you failed to do so, you will be ineligible for the license until you passe the written exam.
